The Loose Thread is Rose’s story. Much of her story takes place in Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, before and during the five gruelling years of the German Occupation, which lasted from 1940-1945.

The Silken Knot is Iris’s story. In 1947, Iris marries and goes to live with her husband in Dinan, in Brittany. But the path to a successful marriage is not a smooth one, especially not when there are two people close by who are determined to prevent the married couple from being happy together.

The Woven Lie is Violet’s story. In 1948, having trained to be a teacher, Violet’s life unexpectedly takes a very different turning after an advertisement in the Times Education Supplement catches her eye, and she finds herself heading for Suffolk, but not to a school.
